We performed a randomized control trial to look at the effect of a simple safe drug ( tramexamic acid- TXA) on the effect on pain and bleeding following Latarjet procedure ( type of shoulder stabalisation) . This drug is routinely used in other operations such as joint replacement surgery but its use in shoulder stabalisation surgery has never been studied. The study group comprised of one group who were give TXA at the time of surgery and a control group who received a placebo. We looked at amount of blood loss, swelling, pain and need for opiod medication. We found that patients who were given TXA had significantly less bloss loss, pain and requirement for opoid medication. We now routinely use tramexamic acid for our patients undergoing latarjet procedure.
